Day 90: "Line is a rich metaphor for the artist. It denotes not only boundary, edge or contour, but is an agent for location, energy, and growth. It is literally movement and change - life itself." - Lance Esplund ______________________________ HDB Flats near Mountbatten Road. Today, one of the objectives in a new town development is to provide unique character and individuality within each town. The whole idea in the end is to provide variance and character for the whole republic through new town developments. It has the aim to foster community relationships and identity. #alexaphotoaday March 31, 2014 at 06:01PM

Day 89: "It is an art to be where you are, and see happiness in life's ever changing landscape. Today look with new eyes, and treasure all you can." - Ritu Ghatourey _____________________________ Condominium alongside shophouses, near Farrer Park MRT. A house, a road, or a town changes with the passing of each day and each year. In most instances, these changes are so slow and incremental that the essential character of a place remains recognizable for many years. This incremental change, however, does not describe how a place changes in Singapore. Our island nation most probably leads the world in the erasure of physical and linguistic landscapes, and with them, our collective memory, that inner terrain which is part of society's intra-psychic landscape. #alexaphotoaday March 30, 2014 at 07:01PM

Day 88: "Brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls aren't there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show us how badly we want things." - Randy Pausch _____________________________ The MacDonald House, Orchard Road. The MacDonald House is the last remaining office building in facing brick in the central area. The building was built in a Neo-Georgian style. It is a reinforced concrete framed structure and clad in light red brickwork of fine detail. In an incident known as the MacDonald House bombing, two Indonesian saboteurs placed a bomb on the mezzanine floor on 10 March 1965, killing three and wounding 33. This was one of a number of terrorist attacks in Singapore during the Indonesian Confrontation in support of President Sukarno's opposition to the merger of Singapore, Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak to form the Federation of Malaysia. #alexaphotoaday March 29, 2014 at 10:04PM

Day 86: "The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common." - Ralph Waldo Emerson ______________________________ HDB Flats in Serangoon Ave 4. Common especially in older flats are the common corridors, some of which may run across the length of slab blocks. Considered public property, they have rules preventing home owners from occupying and restricting movement, with the exception of units at far ends of corridors who may purchase and incorporate parts of the corridor into their units from the HDB. While these corridors are welcome for being the default interaction areas for neighbours and their children, and the added sense of security due to their open-nature, issues of privacy can crop up, resulting in more contemporary blocks featuring far less units per corridor. #alexaphotoaday March 27, 2014 at 07:50PM

Day 85: "It has shown me that everything is illuminated in the light of the past. It is always along the side of us...on the inside, looking out." - Jonathan Safran Foer ______________________________ Singapore Art Museum (former St. Joseph Institution), Bras Basah Rd. "Ora Et Labora", Latin for "Pray and Work" is a reflection of the twin pillars of the La Salle Brothers, Faith and Zeal. Built on the site of a small Catholic chapel erected in the 1830s, the first in Singapore, the former St. Joseph's Institution is another example of the work of a 19th-century French priest-architect, Brother Lothaire. #alexaphotoaday March 26, 2014 at 10:16PM

Day 84: "The more isolated and disconnected we are, the more shattered and distorted our self-identity. We are not healthy when we are alone. We find ourselves when we connect to others. Without community we don't know who we are..." - Erwin Raphael McManus _____________________________ Refurbished Shophouses along Smith Street, Chinatown. Shophouses were designed traditionally a business and dwelling unit with a narrow frontage. The architectural character of many of the terraces in Chinatown is much more Italianate in style. Windows often appear as mere slits with narrow timber jalousies (often with adjustable slats). Fanlights over the windows are usually quite decorative and the pilasters and balconies and even the plasterwork and colours seem to be Mediterranean in flavour. #alexaphotoaday March 25, 2014 at 06:49PM
